Is it possible to get a low bandwidth version of the show to download?

There are some people (even on the dawn of 2006) who are on dial up and many countries only offer metered bandwidth plans to home users for hi-speed/broadband service.

50mb or so every week, is a sizable chunk if your monthly bandwidth quota is only 2gb - 10gb.  Something like 24k -22hz Mono or 32k - 22khz Mono, considerably drops the file size.  Being a talk based show via Skype, with little special effects or music, the sound quality would still be ok at those bitrates.  Not only that, smaller files, less bandwidth, more available to those with sucky download speeds.  More listeners!  HUZZAH!

I would recommend not listening to podcasts if this is your situation, as sad as it is.

Take the show, sample it down to 32k 24khz mono in a sound editor, and save to an MP3 and listen to it.

Besides the intro music, there is no sound quality difference.  As much as it does suck for those on metered bandwidth, there's no reason why there can't be a low bandwidth download, especially when the sound quality isn't sacrificed.

Does a Podcast of 4 people talking via Skype, which Skype has a sample rate of... shock/horror - 32k 24khz Mono - really have to be 128k 44khz Stereo?

50mb or so, for a 45 minute podcast is a little excessive.

I'd totally agree with OJ. Show 15 clocks in over 40MB in file size for a 40 minute show. With a bunch of talking heads there's no reason to go at 128kbps/44,1. This file size could be about 15MB if it was done at 56kbps/22,050. That's a sizeable difference and from what I'm hearing on the show wouldn't reduce the audio quality in the least. This quality level/show size is overkill imho.

This week's show (Episode 17) is 56kbps in mono. The file size is smaller and the sound quality isn't too much for the worse. Have a listen and let us know what you think.
